Time of Heroes







Have you ever played Bolt Action using the Special Character Rules? I have not but I'am going to change it. 
Each of Campaign books by Warlord Games is full of Special Character rules. I think they are fine but point cost is too high to use them in a game. Why not to increase a point limit with an obligation to use Special Character rules for those those extra points? I'am going to try it. In May 2020 we are launching a "Time of Heroes" event. How is it playable? I will give you a feedback for sure. 
Now, please find enclosed all Warlord games Special Characters rules from all Campaign books, gathered in one place. Some stats for a start: 
The nation with a highest number of special characters, suprprisingly ... British (23)! 
The most frequent rank of Special Characters is a Major (or higher), the second is ... NCO (or lower). The most popular slot where the Special Characters appear is - except Higher Command - NCO and Platoon level cmd (1st or 2nd Lt). 
The most popular profession among Special Characters is a Sniper. We have 5 of them: 2 Soviets, one Finnish, one Australian and one Chinese.

Autralian Special characters


Sgt Katue - Australian (Papuan) sniper



May be used in any New Gwinea selector. May be acompanied by 2 men.
Armament: sniper rifle
Level  of training: veteran

Slot: Sniper

Cost: 150pts

Special rules

Sniper. If the sniper special rule is being employed the assistants are spotting and may not fire their own rifles

Behind enemy lines when outflanking Katue squad ignores the -1 modifier to the order test for coming onto the table if the Australian player prefers and this scenario allows got a squad may also forward deployed in the same manner as a normal sniper team

Assassination Katue targeted enemy leaders for elimination on every patrol behind enemy lines. Before the game begins Australian player can pick one enemy units NCO KAtue can ataack this model as if assaulting (rolling a second dice following a success for tough fighter) if he is successful the model is removed from play and the squat starts the game without an NCO.

Intelligence gathering having spent days observing enemy positions Katue has passed valueable intelligence onto his chain of command. Once per game The Australian player my choose which site’s die is drawn for turns first activation
Tough fighter

Geofrey "Doc" Vernon


May be used in any New Gwinea selector. May be acompanied by up to 2 men (13pts each).
Armament: none
Level  of training: veteran
Slot: medic
Cost: 70pts


Special rules

Brave, deaf or both depending on which account is believed Vernon was either utterly fearless or so deaf that he rarely knew he was being shot at either way danger did not face him in the slightest when Vernon and his team received any pin markers roll a die for pin marker just received on a result of 4 plus that pin marker is immediately discarded

Legend of the Kokoda track tirelessly rushing from the encounter to another Vernon was seemingly always present and always helping those who needed him. His presence was inspiring and he earned the respect and gratitude to all who fought alongside him. Vernon confers us a +1 morale bonus to all friendly units within 6“ in the same way as a second lieutenant. Note however that he cannot issue you man snap to action orders


Col. George Warfe




May be used in any New Gwinea selector. May be acompanied by up to 2 men (13pts each).
Armament: as depicted on model
Level  of training: veteran

Special rules

Courage, confidence and charisma these words were used to describe Warfe attributes by the man under his command. If warfare is added to an independent company Raiding party that party will only ever fail order test on the roll of 12. If taken as a separate HQ choice all Militia units in the force game gain Behind enemy lines special rule

Leading value: +4 morale bonus within 12" range

Leslie Bull Allen


May be used in any New Gwinea selector. Allen may be added to any veteran Australian medic unit as an additional man. If Allen is added, no other men may be added to the unit.

Special rules

Leave no man behind Allen was fearless enter tenacious in recovering casualties for medical treatment. Due to the steady flow of recovered man whenever the medic whom Allen accompanies is attempting to provide aid to a friendly unit within 6 inches they may roll an extra D6 for example if a unit sustains 3 casualties then the medic may roll 4 dice rather than 3.


Tom Derric





May be used in any New Gwinea selector. Derric is part of the infantry squad (regular or veteran)

Special rules

As long as Derrick is a part of his squad, all friendly infantry squads within 6" of the Tom Derrick model receives the following special rules: Tough fighters, + 1 Morale bonus, (exactly as if they were in range of a second Lt).

Lt. Col. Lockhrd Ross Fulton


May be added to any Western Europe Canadian selectors from. May be acompanied by up to two men (10pts each)

Special rules

Dogged, Hate the SS: as other Canadian units (vide Canadian sectors p.141)
Lucky: ignores the first time he boceomes a casualty. He takes ant applicable pin markers, but is not removed from the game
Unflappable leadership: all units activated by major Fulton using the You Men, Snap to Action! rule may ignore the effects of 1 pin.

Maj. David Currie


May be added to any Western Europe Canadian selectors from.

Slot: Intelligence officer

Dogged, Hate the SS: as other Canadian units (vide Canadian sectors p.141)

Personal Reconnaissannce: Currie counts as Intelligence Officer

Tank commander: Currie's exceptional aptitude at commanding tanks means that any armored vehicle within his command range can re-roll failed Order test and Morale check.


Corporal Frederick Topham

 

May be  added to any selector western european selector containing Canadian units.

Lucky - corp Topham ignores the first time he becomes a casualty. He takes any aplicable pin markers, butfrom the game.

Without hasitationcorp Tophammay be given an Ambush order. If he is on ambush he may instead of firing immediately run toward a friendly HQ or infantry unit that suffers damage from any shooting attack. Before the damage is applied, if the run move     takes him 6"of the unit he may act to     accordance with the medic rules as described on page 83 of the Bolt Action rulebook. This ability is  not triggered by close combat casualties

May be added to any British selectors from Greece, Africa or Italy. May be acompanied by up to two men (13pts each)

Master of Close Quaters: his unit always attack first when charging into close quaters, even himself roll 4 dice for his close quater attacks against infantry and artillery units and his attacks have penetration value of 1+

Gurkha Special characters


Bhanbhagta Gurung




May be added to any British selector where Gurkha team are available. Gurung is a part of the Gurkha infantry squad

Special rules

Extra tough fighter - has four attacks in close quarters rather thank a normal two (edit for second edition rules: you roll two dice during close quartes and each success could be rolled again)

Rampage - If Gurung's unit has enemy infantry or artillery unit within 12" when it is given an order then immediately before resolving the order (even before rolling any Command test where required) Gurung rushes forward and attacks the nearest enemy unit (ignoring vehicles). He covers the distance regardless of how far it is, terrain or any other impediment. So surprised is the foe (not to mention to the opposite player) by this bold attack, that the enemy unit may make no response and does not fight. Roll a dice and on the 4+ the battle crazed Gurkha inflicts one casualty on 5+ two casualties and on 6 three casualties. Once any casualties are removed Gurung is placed back with his unit, ready to take part in whatever action the unit makes that turn.


Philipino Special Characters


Narcisco Ortilano



May be added to any Far East British selector. Ortilano is a lone MMG operator

Chindit: Wingate and his team have the same two special rules as Chindits sections, as described by the Armies of Great Britain book

Infiltration Master: if your force includes Wingate, any friendly infantry Outflanking units that become available may enter the game either by their chosen short table edge, as normal, or from any point on the enemy side of the table

Tough fighter: Wingate and his team are Tough Fighters

Leading value: +4 morale bonus within 12" range

Mikael - Mad Mike - Calvert



May be added to any Burma selectors. May be acompanied by up to two men (13pts each)

Chindit: Calvert and his team have the same two special rules as Chindits sections, as described by the Armies of Great Britain book;

Tactical control: Morale bonus +4 and range 12"

Follow me!: Calvert's team and other units of Chindits that are within 12" of Calvert are allowed to make a Run move after both sides have finished set-up but before the first turn of the game

Flying Officer CFC Lee


 


May be added to any African or South European British selectors. May be acompanied by up to two men (13pts each)

Tough fighter note, this rule does not apply to his men

Air Observer When C F C Lee calls an air strike, you can re-roll the result on both the Air Strike Chart and on the chart to determine which airplanes arrives. In both cases, of course, the second result stands, even it’s worse than the first! 

 

“Mad Jack” Churchill 


May be added to any European British selectors where Commando units are available. May be acompanied by up to two men (14pts each)

Armament: Jack Churchill is equipped with broadsword and bow (counts as a rifle). Other men are equipped with submachine gun, pistol or rifle/carbine as depicted on the models.

Lead by example (and bagpipe!): Churchill’s Morale bonus is +4. Whenever his order die shows Down or Rally, Churchill is playing his bagpipe, and so the range of his Morale bonus is increased from 12" to 24”

Behind enemy lines: When Outflanking as described on page 119 of the Bolt Action rulebook, this unit ignores the -1 modifier to the Order test for coming onto the table.

Jock Campbell


May be added to any British selectors from Africa. May be acompanied by up to two men (13pts each)

Paddy Maine


May appear in any British selectors containing SAS units. May be acompanied by up to two men (18pts each)

Special mission if Paddy is in your force SAS units left in reserve can go on a special mission. This units must outflank even in scenarios when do not allow outflanking. When they become available they can enter the battlefield from either the declared short edge or any point along the enemy table edge.

Who dares wins to represent this special training and motivation Paddy and his man have the fanatics special rule 

 

Lord Lovat




May appear in any British selectors containing Commando units. May be acompanied by up to two men (13pts each) and piper Milkin for 45pts.

Commanding Presence: Lord Lovat fearless presence keeps the soldiers under him steadfast in their duty; ceonferring rating +5 bonus to morale within his command radius

Piper Bill Milkin bagpies extend Lovat's command range to 24". In addition force with Lovat accompanied by Millkin don't pick national characteristic for their force. Instead of this at the start of each turn Millkin chooses tune  to play on his pipes which is linked to a specific national characterisctic. The song played by Millkin determines what national characteristic is in effect that turn (Up and et them, Tough as boots, Rapid Fire). If Millkin is killed during the game the national characteristic that was in effect remains in effect for the rest of the game

Lt. Col. Peter Young

May appear in British Beach assault selector. May be acompanied by german shepard or english bulldog and up to 2 men 14pts each.

Special rules

Securing the beaches: If Maud is on the table with Down order any attempt to bring Reserves via boats ignores -1 modifier. Any boat or landing craft attempting to move from deep water to shallow water has +1 modifier to the roll on the Reef table if Maud is on the table with Down order (not cumulative with other units sharing this rule)
Winnie and a Shillealagh: Whilst any soldiers accompanying Maud are Tough Fighters Maud himself has a dog and a stick. He attack with two dice during the assault.
The sooner you people get off the beaches the sooner they'll stop shelling. It is very bad for the dog - Maud gives normal +4 morale bonus. However he may activate 5 units using "You man snap to action" rule, but only using Run or Advance order. He wants people off his beach.
Never mind the blathering: Maud is always ready to lend an encouraging word to his subordinates. Once per turn Maud may use Advance or Run order to close within 6" of a friendly unit to give them a piece of his mind. That unit may remove all pin markers. And then add 1pin marker for reprimand

Stubborn Paratroopers don't give in easily: all Paratroopers counts as Stubborn If forced to check their morale through being reduced to half nubers they test they initial morale rating ignoring all pins.
Thorough Planner: When fighting in scenario or battle that uses night fighting rules every unit in a force that has Otway present in it gains an extra 6" vision when they add visibility to their visibility roll


Sergeant Patrick McGeever



May appear in any British selector containing paratroopers. sgt. McGeever is a part of MMG team consist of 3 men.

May added to any British selector containing Paratroopers. Robert Cain may be acompanied by up to two men (14pts each)

Special Rules

Major Cain was an outstanding leader who inspired confidence and any infantry unit within his command range can re roll any activation or morale test except FUBAR. Cain was also remarkable shot with a PIAT. He is assumed to have a PIAT to hand at all times and always hits with score of 3 or more regardless of the modifiers

Lance sergeant John Baskeyfield




May added to any British selector containing Paratroopers as a member of 6pdr (medium AT) team.
Armament: 6 pdr (medium AT)

Special Rules

Ignores modifiers when firing on vehicles just as sniper ignores modifiers when firing on infantry. Additionally he can give a free Rally order to his gun before issuing it with any order, except for Down

May be added to any early war British selector containing regular infantry. Harry Nichols is not a team, but instead of this may be added to one of your regular infantry sections, replacing LMG gunner, for the cost +50pts.

Special Rules


Lead from the front: any regualar early war infantry which Nichols is added to is upgraded to veterans for +3pts per model even if the selector does normally allow veteran units. In addition at the end of every turn the squad automatically losses one pin marker
Shooting from the hip: Nichols is armed with a LMG. However this weapon still reuires a loader from the section and it replaces the section option to take a LMG (it is not additional LMG)
Unkillable: if is Nichols is killed, roll a single D6 – on a 4+ he remains in play

Sgt mjr Stanley Hollis 



May be  added to any late war British selector containing regular infantry. Stan Hollis is not a team, but instead of this may be added to one of your regular infantry sections, replacing the NCO, for the cost +85pts.

Captured AEC 4×4 ‘Dorchester’ Armoured Command Vehicle for an additional 120 pts

May be  added to any african German selector. Halm may be is a part of Heavy Anti tank gun team.

The most dangerous man in Europe Skorzenny morale bonus is +4 and the range of his ability is 12".

Long jumper if Skorzenny is in your force half of your Brandenburgers or any other German special forces units rounding up can deploy by long jump unconventional techniques this unit are left in reserve and must outflank however when they become available they can enter the battlefield from either their declared short edge or any point along the enemies table edge.


Sergeant Steiner



May be  added to any East front German selector containing veteran infantry squads. Steiner is not a team, but instead may be added to one of your Heer Veteran Infantry or Heer Veteran Grenadier squads, replacing their normal NCO, for the cost +50pts.

Special Rules

Terrifying presence: Steiner and his men count as Tough Fighters, and when the unit charges into close quarters, the target unit may never react, regardless of the range of the charge.

Hate all officers! Steiner confers a +1 Morale bonus to his squad (and only to them!) as long as they are out of range of any friendly officer. However, when in range of a friendly officer, not only does Steiner’s bonus not apply, but the officer’s Morale bonus is actually counted as a penalty (e.g. –1 for a 2nd lieutenant, –3 for a Captain, etc.). Finally, if the unit rolls a Fubar, it will automatically Fire at the highest-ranking friendly officer they can see.


Gen Lt Pellangehr 



May be  added to any German early war (till 1941) selector. Pellangehr may be acompanied by up to two men (13pts each)

May be  added to any German early war (till 1941) selector. Georg Michael as a 1st lieutnant may replace platoon commander. He may be acompanied by up to two men (13pts each)

Rally to the colours: All friendly infantry and artillery units within 12" can reroll failed Order test when ordered to Rally, In addition when Rally order is successfully issued the unit rolls two dices to determine the number of pins to be discarded and chooses higher result. However while unit carrying the flag has a Down or Ambush order dice on it the flag is kept hidden and has no effect;

I said no one step back: Whenever a friendly infantry or artillery unit fails an Order test (except for Rally, see above) within 6” of Commissar Potemkin, remove one model from the unit and re-roll the dice. If the second result is another fail, remove another model and take the test again. If the third test is another fail, remove another model and take the test again. If the fourth test is another fail, then the unit fails the order test as normal, and Potemkin and his unit are removed instead… you can only shoot your own side so many times before someone decides to return fire.
